For decades, I’ve been creating and designing business presentations – and even in the age of AI, I still see the same mistakes repeated over and over. The good news? They’re actually very easy to fix.
Whether you’re presenting to clients, investors, managers, or colleagues… here are 5 common mistakes that weaken your presentation’s impact and results – and simple ways to avoid them:
❌ Not addressing your audience’s pain pointEven the most professional presentation won’t work if it doesn’t connect to your audience’s core problem.
📌 How to avoid it?🔹 Start with the problem you solve to capture attention – don’t overload with information right away.🔹 Don’t assume your audience remembers all their challenges.🔹 If there’s already agreement on the problem, just mention it briefly.
❌ Overloading your audience’s attention spanToo much text, busy graphics, and crowded slides challenge your audience’s focus.
📌 How to avoid it?
🔹 Stick to one main message per slide.
🔹 Use a clean, minimalist design.
🔹 Limit text to 5–6 lines max.
🔹 Don’t read out loud from the slides – if you’re afraid to forget, keep notes on your phone, iPad, or a printed page. Use the slide as an anchor, not a script.
❌ Too much information and technical detailEven AI-generated decks can add unnecessary content that overwhelms viewers.
📌 How to avoid it?
🔹 Show only the essential information.
🔹 Avoid jargon or acronyms only insiders know.
🔹 You don’t need to detail every feature or module to persuade.
🔹 Leave room for audience questions if they want to go deeper.
❌ Not practicing the deliveryEven the most advanced tech can’t replace personal rehearsal.
📌 How to avoid it?🔹 Practice your presentation out loud at least 3–4 times.
🔹 Go through every slide until you feel confident.
🔹 Ask friends or colleagues for feedback.
❌ No compelling storyA presentation without a clear narrative is just a collection of slides.
📌 How to avoid it?
🔹 Build a story with a beginning, middle, and end: Problem – Solution – Benefit.
🔹 Follow a logical order and think: “What would I expect to see next?”
🔹 Use examples and stories to help your audience imagine the value.
🔹 Don’t leave them guessing at the end – add a call to action, explain the next steps, and show how your solution can be implemented. And don’t forget to include your contact info.
🎯 In summary:You don’t need my services to create a strong, professional presentation. Just follow these steps and you’ll see the difference.
If you apply these principles, every presentation can become a tool that leads to clear and meaningful results.
Despite technological advances, the fundamentals of a winning presentation remain the same: know your audience, build a strong story, and practice!
